Filipino; the symbolic national
language of the Philippines. Filipino is more than just a means for
communication, Filipino bridges or fills up the gap between different
communities and also the one that strengthens it. The importance of celebrating
Buwan ng Wika is; First, it recognizes and solves our language problem due to
our archipelagic nature and colonial past. Second, it represents us as a people
and as a country. Third and the last, it commemorates the efforts of the person
behind every success of our own, Filipino language, President Manuel Luis
Quezon who is said to be the “Ama ng Wikang Pambansa”.
With this year’s theme, “Wikang
Katutubo: Tungo sa Isang Bansang Filipino” aims to raise awareness about
indigenous languages’ role in promoting our country’s identity. Filipino and a
national language, recognizes that the bridge in which this language fills up
is an avenue to enrich the Filipino language as more inclusive by preserving
elements from native Philippine languages.
Filipino language should embrace the
multicultural identity of our nation. It should reflect the social and cultural
realities that our nation is experiencing right now. Therefore, Buwan ng Wika
simply serves as a cue or reminder that as we use the Filipino language we
should appreciate numerous cultures that our beloved country the pearl of the
orient, the Philippines have.
